Starting April 1, 2025, California landlords must offer tenants the option to report on-time rent payments to at least one credit bureau. This new law aims to help renters build their credit histories through responsible rent payments. See Cal. Civ. Code Sec. 1954.07.

Who Does This Apply To?
✔️ Properties with 16+ units (unless covered by another rent reporting law for assisted housing).
✔️ Smaller properties (15 or fewer units) if they are corporately owned and the owner has more than one rental property.

What Landlords Must Do:
📌 For new tenants (leases starting on or after April 1, 2025), the rent reporting option must be offered at lease signing.
📌 For existing tenants (leases signed before April 1, 2025), the offer must be provided no later than April 1, 2025.

This law could benefit renters looking to strengthen their credit while ensuring more transparency in the rental process. Landlords, now’s the time to prepare!
